Just completed binge-watching the much-awaited Heeramandi by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, and it was an epic ride. Let’s dive in. Every frame of this series is breathtaking, showcasing Bhansali’s unparalleled artistry in cinematography, costumes, and jewellry, which truly transport you to a different world. Heeramandi is a period drama on Netflix, delving into the power dynamics among the elite Tawaif houses in pre-independent India under British Raj. The duration of Heeramandi is 8 episodes, with each episode approximately 1 hour long.
I’ve become a big fan of Manisha Koirala after this; her acting was so immersive, she ate & left no crumbs. If I had to remember one person’s acting from this series, it would be hers. Sonakshi Sinha, in a very convincing performance, gave her best career performance (PS: I haven’t watched Lootera yet). Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fardeen Khan, and Taha Shah Badussha all delivered amazing performances. Taha Shah Badussha’s looks and acting will charm you.
I wonder if SLB made this series to relaunch his niece, Sharmin Segal. I didn’t have a problem with her acting, but it was surprising to see her in such a significant role. The drama, love story, and magic showcased in Heeramandi were captivating. The tragedy of every character was depicted beautifully.
However, the screenplay shifting from a family dispute to nationalism didn’t resonate with me. The nationalism theme felt fake, and I couldn’t connect with the ending because of it. I would have loved it if the series had focused on the family dispute and not the nationalism angle.
In conclusion, Heeramandi is a mind-blowing series, but the twist in the narrative led to its downfall. If you love SLB’s work and historical epics, it’s a must-watch. I’d rate the first 5 episodes 4.5 stars and the whole series 3.75 stars.
